The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is warning over potential security risks Russian antivirus Kaspersky AV. With the continued rise in threat posed by Russia, customers are being urged to find a solution. One of the oldest antivirus software’s in the world, Kaspersky was established in 1997 and is still headquartered in Moscow. In 2017 the US began banning government agencies from using their products, which extended to the EU the year after.

“A Russian IT manufacturer can conduct offensive operations itself, be forced to attack target systems against its own will, or be spied on without its knowledge as a victim of a cyber operation, or be used as a tool for attacks against its own customers,”

– BSI

The vendor Kaspersky maintains these calls are being made purely on political grounds, without any technical basis. Having moved its data infrastructure to Switzerland, it believes this is enough to mitigate the threat.
