New .au domain names coming to Australia

Table of Contents

Shorter and simpler domain names are coming to Australia March 24th 2022, with the introduction of the .au namespace. The new web options will be available for both email and websites, creating a cleaner look. These changes mark the biggest innovation to the web space in over 20 years, providing Australians with a greater choice in trusted .au domains.

Unlike .com.au names, the new domains will be available to everyone with an Australian presence. For the full eligibility guidelines please read .au direct rules.

Early access for existing domain name holders

Registrants of existing domain names have first preference to apply for priority to register the exact match of their existing domain name in the new .au direct namespace. For example, the registrant of screwlooseit.com.au can apply for priority to register screwlooseit.au before it is released to the general public.

In cases with more than one application for the same .au direct name (e.g. the registrant of screwlooseit.com.au and the registrant of screwlooseit.net.au both apply for screwlooseit.au). In those cases, the .au direct name will be allocated according to priority category.
